Marriage in the 1500s

READ THIS ONE YOU WILL FIND IT SOOOO INTERESTING...I SURE DID....

The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be.

Here are some facts about the 1500s:

These are interesting!

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and off the roof. Hence thesaying "It's raining cats and dogs."

John Day Fossil Beds

We took a trip to the John Day Fossil Beds in Central Oregon on our way up to Kimberly. Some of the geography was incredible.

Main Entrance Sign

We saw a lot of interesting geology while we were there.

Rock Type Information Rock Types

But it wasn't just Geology (and the rocks).

The rock types we learned about include:

  • Basalt - The top layers of the valley hills are dark, dense, iron-rich rock. They formed from lava floods occurring about 16,000,000 years ago. Each lava flow spread for hundreds of square miles, incinerating the land.
  • Claystone - Beneath the basalt layers are deposits composed largely of volcanic ash, deposited by air and water. Much of these ash deposits were worked into clay-rich soils, then buried and changed into hard rock. "Claystone" may be in shades of white, pale green, red, or brown.
  • Pigture Gorge Ignimbrite - Look just above the trees before you. Sandwiched in the far claystone layer is a layer of red and tan welded tuff, called ignimbrite. During one moment in geologic time, a violent eruption, to the west, ejected massive amounts of hot gasses and volcanic particles which traveled great distances across the land at high speed. The rock layer formed by this fiery torrent has been argon-dated at 28,700,000 years old.
  • Blue Basin Tuff - Part of this layer, deposits of very hot ash-fall from a nearby volcano, tops the pale green butte to the right (unfortunately, I don't have a photo of this). This tuff is hard, cemented together but not welded. It has been argon-dated at 28,900,000 years old.
Rock Type Information Rock Types

The below information about the rocks we've been looking at in the area was plentiful at the site. There was also a lot of information about the animas (including some bones) that lived in the area.

We also had the opportunity to learn about the Fossils that are there.

And with each passing day, they discover more and more (both here and in other locations around the world) about the historical significance of the fossils and what we've done to our planet.

Larry's Memorial Service

/images/IMG_1644.JPG

I've completed importing and, hopefully, fixing the images from Larry's memorial service in Grant, Alabama. Pam hosted a wonderful memorial service to Larry, providing great food and live music for all of us to enjoy as we gathered to celebrate his life and accomplishments.

To the right is a photo of Larry (I was able to take a picture of the photo with my digital camera, so I'd have a copy).

I haven't quite finished labeling and linking the pictures and descriptions the way I wanted to, but I didn't feel I should hold up on publishing it for everyone to see.

I'm hoping that I can provide a linke to the gallery soon (now that I'm using some different software for my website).

I've tried to contact Pam and her kids, but I haven't had any luck. There's been no response from either email address I have.

If someone knows how to reach her, would you send me an email?

Huntsville, Alabama

While driving from Nashville, TN to Grant, AL (outside Huntsville, AL) for my brother's Memorial Service in 2007, my wife and I stopped at the border and did the "tourist thing." It was interesting to see some of the NASA and Army equipment that was displayed, and while we only stayed there a few minutes to stretch our legs, I did capture these pictures.

Rays New Car

My buddy got a brand new Mustang and showed up for a wedding. We slipped out, and I got a few pictures of the car, and my wife and Karla.

They will be available later.

Enjoy.

Taylor Bentler Wedding

The photos of the wedding are slowly being posted. A lot of the inside ones are a little dark because there wasn't enough light, even with the flash. Some of the others are a little blurry because I zoomed in too far or the auto-focus didn't pick the right image to focus on. I'm still trying to figure out the new camera. So I wasn't aware that there wasn't enough light or that the focus wasn't quite right.

When looking at the images, there is a "preview" view (the default view), a thumbnail view, and an "original" image view. If you want the picture, make sure you select the original view to save!

If the picture has a (-a) at the end of the file name, it's an altered image because the image was originally turned 90 degrees. I wanted all the images to be easily viewable, so, I modified them. And one picture got "screwed" up trying to import it, and I don't have a higher quality view.

If you don't have access to the page, but were at the wedding, let me know and I'll create an account so you can log in and look at the pictures!

Kids Sleeping

/images/family/KidsSleeping.jpg

No web site would be complete without the obligatory family photo. Not that I mind, I think I've got a handsome son, gorgeous daughter and beautiful wife. Anyway, here is that obligatory photo. I will put up more when I get the chance. I've promised that once I was done with school (which I finished) I would put some family pictures on the web. I guess it is time for me to follow through...... Little Angels.....Asleep on the couch.... It's an old picture (probably about 6 years old), but a cute one nonetheless.
